Baratang Island

Nestled between the more popular South and Middle Andaman Islands lies a destination that offers adventure, mystery, and untouched natural beauty – Baratang Island. Located around 100 kilometers north of Port Blair, Baratang is a place where emerald mangrove creeks, bubbling mud volcanoes, awe-inspiring limestone caves, and serene beaches coexist in harmony. Often overshadowed by Havelock and Neil Island, Baratang offers a completely different experience – raw, rugged, and rich in ecological and geological diversity. For those seeking offbeat travel, Baratang Island is a must-visit. It is a place where the journey is as intriguing as the destination itself, with roads cutting through tribal reserves, ferries crossing straits, and natural formations unlike any other in India.

Location & Geography

Baratang Island is part of the North and Middle Andaman administrative district. It is surrounded by other prominent islands like Long Island to the north and Interview Island to the west. The island is roughly 243 square kilometers in size and is covered with dense tropical forests, mangrove ecosystems, coastal wetlands, and tribal reserves. The island is situated along the Andaman Trunk Road (ATR), making it accessible by both road and water from Port Blair. Despite its proximity to the capital, Baratang remains largely undeveloped and pristine, which adds to its charm.

Natural Attractions of Baratang Island

Baratang Island is home to some of the most unusual and rare natural wonders in the Andaman Islands – several of which are not found anywhere else in India. The island is a paradise for ecotourism enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers.

Limestone Caves

Among Baratang’s most famous attractions are its limestone caves, located deep within the mangrove forests. These caves are made from sedimentary rock formations created over millions of years. Inside, visitors are treated to a surreal view of stalactites and stalagmites in intricate formations that glisten under torchlight.

Mud Volcano

Baratang is home to one of India’s only active mud volcanoes. Unlike fiery eruptions, this volcano emits mud bubbles and gases, which is a fascinating sight.

Parrot Island

Located near Baratang Jetty, Parrot Island is a unique attraction that becomes a spectacle at sunset. Every evening, thousands of parrots and parakeets return to this small island to roost, creating a magical scene of fluttering wings and bird calls.

Baludera Beach
